MANILA, Philippines — After nearly two months of consecutive hikes, diesel prices will drop by P0.70 per liter starting Tuesday, October 21. Kerosene prices are also set to decrease, while gasoline prices are expected to see a slight increase.
Compared to last week’s mixed fuel price adjustments, this week will see slightly larger rollbacks. Diesel prices will drop by P0.70 per liter, kerosene by P0.60 per liter, while gasoline will inch up by P0.10 per liter.
Shell Pilipinas, Seaoil, PetroGazz and CleanFuel announced the latest price adjustments on Monday, October 20, after the five-day trading period of refined petroleum products last week.
The Department of Energy’s Oil Industry Management Bureau (DOE-OIMB) initially projected rollbacks of over P1 per liter for diesel and cuts for gasoline, but final adjustments were smaller, with gasoline prices instead increasing. This was due to the anticipated supply glut from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and its allies.
Market factors. Geopolitical tensions involving the United States, Russia, Ukraine and Israel continue to shape global oil markets, according to industry experts. Even with the rollbacks, fuel prices stay elevated amid US-China trade tensions and refineries in Asia under maintenance during a period of strong demand.
While crude oil prices climbed last week amid stronger demand from US refineries, they were tempered by rising US supply and the peace deal between Israel and Hamas, according to the DOE.
However, the truce appears fragile, as clashes resumed over the weekend with Israel launching airstrikes in Gaza on Sunday, killing more than 20 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health. Hamas’ military wing, meanwhile, denied involvement in the Rafah shooting, saying it remains committed to the ceasefire.
Current pump prices. Last week, gasoline prices rose by P0.30 per liter while diesel remained unchanged. Kerosene prices decreased by P0.20 per liter.
According to the DOE’s price monitoring, the prevailing retail fuel prices in Metro Manila gas stations from October 14 to October 20 are as follows:
Gasoline (RON97/100) – P63.87
Gasoline (RON95) – P59.90
Gasoline (RON91) – P54.30
Diesel – P55.45
Diesel Plus – P59.80
Kerosene – P76.74
Following this week’s adjustments, diesel prices have risen by P17.15 per liter since the start of the year, gasoline by P15.30 — the highest to date — and kerosene by P4.85.
