Dow Jones Today | US Stock Market LIVE Updates: Stocks were under pressure on Thursday (March 12) as oil prices added to their surge on supply disruption worries while the Iran war continued. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 547 points, or 1.2%. The S&P 500 lost 0.8%, while the Nasdaq Composite declined 0.9%.
Late Wednesday, Energy Secretary Chris Wright said the US will release 172 million barrels of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, with deliveries expected to take about 120 days. The announcement followed President Donald Trump’s remarks in an interview with Cincinnati broadcaster WKRC that he would tap the reserve.
Markets, however, remained under pressure as crude prices continued to rise. West Texas Intermediate futures climbed 6% to around $93 per barrel, while Brent crude also gained 6% to roughly $98 per barrel and briefly touched $100.
