MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Friday, March 20, inspected the Laguna distribution center of Century Pacific Food Inc. as part of efforts to ensure stable food supply amid fears of inflation.
Officials said the facility, operated by the country’s largest canned food manufacturer, can store up to 36 million cans, enough to supply CALABARZON, MIMAROPA and Bicol for about 45 days.
“Ang supply ay hindi kailangan na mag-alala ang taong-bayan. Ang food supply natin ay sapat kahit na pangmatagalan,” Marcos said during the visit. (The public does not need to worry about supply. Our food supply is sufficient even for the long term.)
Marcos said manufacturers have committed to keeping prices of basic food items stable for as long as possible despite rising costs in oil.
“At bukod pa roon ay sila naman ay pumapayag na to keep the prices na hindi tataas ang presyo hangga’t kaya nila. Kaya siguro mga isang buwan, ‘yung iba baka dalawang buwan hindi magagalaw ‘yung presyo,” he added.
(They are also willing to keep prices from increasing as much as they can. Perhaps for about a month, and for some, maybe two months, prices will not change.)
He said the visit aimed to strengthen coordination with suppliers and manufacturers to help maintain sufficient supply and stable prices of basic necessities.
Marcos added that other food processors and suppliers have also assured the government of adequate stock levels.
Capacity and stock level
Century Pacific Food Inc., the country’s largest canned food manufacturer, said it has sufficient inventory and production capacity despite global disruptions.
The company’s Laguna distribution center in Calamba City can store up to 36 million cans of food, equivalent to around 1.1 million cases. Officials said this is enough to supply the CALABARZON, MIMAROPA and Bicol regions for about 45 days.
Century Pacific produces canned tuna and sardines, corned beef and processed milk products.
The company said geopolitical developments may affect oil, shipping and commodity costs, but it has managed similar disruptions in the past by diversifying its sourcing.
It operates seven manufacturing hubs and 26 warehouses nationwide.
Marcos said the government will continue to monitor food supply and prices to ensure stability and protect consumers.
