The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has reported a notable increase in the average price of 5kg of cooking gas, rising from N6,430.02 in August to N6,699.63 in September 2024. This represents a 4.19% month-on-month increase, while year-on-year, the price has surged by 59.90%, up from N4,189.96 in September 2023.
The report, released on Friday in Abuja, indicates that Rivers State recorded the highest average price at N7,285.71, followed closely by Gombe at N7,271.88 and Borno at N7,089.72. Conversely, Kebbi has the lowest price at N5,950.00, with Kano and Benue following at N6,133.33 and N6,143.52, respectively. The North-East region recorded the highest average retail price at N6,929.02, while the North-West had the lowest at N6,382.30.
For the 12.5kg cooking gas, the average retail price increased by 4.89% from N15,552.56 in August to N16,313.43 in September. On a year-on-year basis, this marks a substantial 76.41% rise from N9,247.40 in September 2023. Rivers once again saw the highest average price for 12.5kg at N17,992.86, while Adamawa recorded the lowest at N13,983.33.
In terms of kerosene, the average retail price per litre rose to N1,957.44 in September, reflecting a 5.97% increase from N1,847.59 in August. Year-on-year, this price rose by 50.68% from N1,299.03 in September 2023. Abuja had the highest average price at N2,816.67 per litre, while Bayelsa recorded the lowest at N1,416.67.
The report also indicated that the average retail price per gallon of kerosene climbed to N6,818.10 in September, marking a 5.84% increase from N6,441.94 in August and a 55.69% rise compared to N4,379.31 in September 2023. Katsina reported the highest price at N8,400 per gallon, while Nasarawa had the lowest at N5,250.00. The North-West region showed the highest average price per gallon at N7,809.52.
